In the current era of global integration and hyper connectivity, traveling to foreign nations has become more straightforward and economical than ever. From a personal perspective, I would contend that this phenomenon does more harm than good due to its detrimental influence on the indigenous environment and culture alike.

To begin with, the exponential development of international tourism comes at the expense of tremendous environmental repercussions that are frequently neglected. Initially, ecology degradation can be engendered owing to the hefty amount of unsightly rubbish littered by insensible visitors. To exemplify, the flow of overseas travelers to Phu Quoc Island has spawned plenty of indecomposable garbage, particularly plastic materials, which is exacerbated by the lack of waste regulation imposed by local authorities. Furthermore, the booming travel industry can give rise to severe biodiversity loss and endangerment of numerous native species. It is an often overlooked fact that the regular routines and subsequently reproduction rate of local flora and fauna could be adversely affected by increased cross-border tourism, hence resulting in higher risks of biodiversity losses.

In addition, irreversible cultural ramifications can also be brought about by mass tourism along with governmental negligence. Indeed, indigenous inhabitants may suffer from a loss of cultural value due to  profit-oriented travel trade. In other words, given the immense economic prospects conferred by tourism, cultural significance deterioration can come as a consequence of such unquestioning pursuit of financial potential. Another negative effect of surging global tourism lies in the erosion of cultural identity. Indisputably, local administration’s attempts to promote travel trade on an international scale have augmented cross-cultural interaction and convergence, thus potentially undermining the socio-cultural distinctiveness of the locality.

To conclude, I am convinced that the tourism industry has carried devastating implications regarding culture diversity and the environment alike. Therefore, both local residents and the host country should make a concerted effort to manage both domestic and transnational travel trade more sustainably, thereby embracing its tremendous benefits while avoiding the undesired pitfalls.
