Several people opine that the use of mobile phones in certain venues should be prohibited the same way as smoking due to their similar degree of harmful impacts. From a personal perspective, I completely disapprove of this assumption by virtue of cellphones’ indispensable importance and its different impacts on the public compared to smoking.

One reason is that forbidding mobile phones in public places is nearly unjustifiable and impossible since it might disrupt the transmission of essential information among users. In the current era of technology and hyper connectivity, contact via such personal devices as smartphones has become increasingly vital for work or study purposes. If individuals were not permitted to utilize this crucial tool in specific sites, particularly public ones, many undesired emergencies namely urgent meetings or calls from family could not be responded to and handled in time. As a consequence, both private and professional relationships would be detrimentally affected because of such unnecessary information interruptions.

Another point is that it would be a fallacy to ban using mobile phones like smoking owing to the radical difference between these two activities’ essence and influence. Admittedly, watching content or making phone calls in a disrespectful manner can disturb or irritate surrounding people in a communal environment. Nevertheless, while smoking in public places can turn others into secondhand smokers, directly impacting their physical well-being, cellphones can be of tremendous benefit to users when exploited appropriately. Therefore, in lieu of making it illegal to utilize mobile phones in such locations, the authorities should develop adequate phone etiquettes among the general populace for improved public phone-using habits.

In conclusion,  the prohibition of personal phones in specific places is far from ideal in mitigating their drawbacks. Hence, I am convinced that protocols relating to polite phone usage should be adopted for the public to fully embrace its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls.
