The charts below show the percentage of Australia men and women in three age groups who were employed in 1954, 2001 and 2014.

Male:

• 1984: nearly all people aged 35-44 had a job // far surpassing 15-19 and 60-64 aged ones by around 25% and 40% respectively
• 2001: hardly any noticeable variation of all age brackets
• 2014: 35-44 still maintained their first spot // 60-64 underwent a considerable rise to about 60% // overtaking the youngest group (50%) to rank second

Female:

• 1984: around three fifths of women in the 15-19 and 35-44 age in work // roughly six times the oldest group
• 2014: substantial increases in the employment rate of 35-44 and 60-64 // the former topping the chart (approximately 80%) versus over 45% among the latter // 15-19 lost their first rank // a marginal decline to under 60%

The bar charts depict the changes in the employment rate in Australia categorized by gender and age cohort from 1984 to 2014. Overall, an upward trend was registered in the percentage of 35-64 aged employed people, whereas the reverse was true for 15-19 aged ones. Moreover, 35-44-year-olds were the primary source of the labor workforce in Australia throughout the surveyed period.

Regarding males, in 1984, nearly all people aged 35-44 in Australia had a job, far surpassing the figures for 15-19 and 60-64 aged ones by around 25% and 40% respectively. Over the following 17 years, hardly any noticeable variation was recorded in the proportion of all age brackets. By 2014, however, while 35-44-year-old men still maintained their first spot, those 60-64 years old underwent a considerable rise to about 60%, overtaking the youngest group (50%) to rank second.

Age disparity was less significant when it comes to the opposite sex. Specifically, around three fifths of women in the 15-19 and 35-44 age brackets were in work in 1984, roughly six times as high as that of the oldest group. After three decades, substantial increases were witnessed in the employment rate of 35-44 and 60-64 aged females, with the former topping the chart (approximately 80%) versus over 45% among the latter. Meanwhile, 15-19-year-olds lost their first rank after experiencing a marginal decline to under 60% in 2014.
