It is an unpleasant but indisputable fact that environmental issues worlwide have become severe at an alarming level. In view of this context, many people assume that such problems should be tackled internationally, whereas others deem taking countrywide actions would be a more beneficial approach. The following essay will elaborate on both viewpoints before stating my personal perspective on this contentious matter.
On the one hand, the belief that environment protection requires measures adopted on a global scale is justifiable to a certain extent. Firstly, since environmental issues as climate change and global warming are not confronted by any single nation, cross-border campaigns should be conducted to address them more thoroughly. This can be exemplified by Earth Hour, an event that encourages individuals and businesses worldwide to switch off power at the same time for one hour, thereby contributing to energy saving on a large scale. Secondly, collaborative efforts manifested in various forms namely transnational assemblies or treaties play a crucial role in tackling global ecological effectively. For instance, the Kyoto Protol, an international agreement developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, incentivized 192 parties to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions sustainably.
On the other hand, it is also reasonable to claim that individual nations can contend with environmental problems more efficiently. Indeed, the driving forces behind ecological issues vary from one country to another. Nigeria, for example, mainly deals with rampant deforestation, while air pollution is the primary source of environmental degradation in India. Hence, for greater effectiveness, each nation should implement policies that specifically solve the problems they encounter. In addition, it is the citizens of a country that directly bear the brunt of such environmental hazards as water contamination, wildfire or landslide, which detrimentally affect their physical well-being. Therefore, the government is responsible for taking the initiative to swiftly mitigate these challenges in order to safeguard the general public’s living quality.
On balance, proponents of both standpoints irrefutably have sound arguments for their convictions. Personally, however, I would argue for a combination of both efforts at both levels since environmental issues are cross-border complicated issues, making it nearly impossible for any single government or international organization to tackle it alone.
