Many people assume that extrinsic factors such as poverty and social issues are the driving force behind criminality, whereas others attribute this to intrinsic factors, namely human nature. The following essay elaborates on both viewpoints before stating my personal perspective on this contentious matter.
On the one hand, the assumption of misconduct as the outcome of destitute circumstances is reasonable to a certain extent. Firstly, in several areas, particularly those with high population density, there exist numerous social problems, ranging from high unemployment rates, insufficient water supply, to inadequate provision of decent housing, healthcare and education. As a consequence, numerous residents are left in poor living conditions with no occupation, thus resorting to criminal activities namely pickpocketing, drug selling or armed robberies to sustain a living. Secondly, crime can also be triggered by social inequality, in which rising wealth discrepancy creates a sense of injustice and deprivation among the poor, who are habitually patronized and marginalized by the affluent. This, in turn, can accumulate social tension and eventually result in such crimes as violence or assault.
On the other hand, it is also justifiable to claim that criminal offense is innate and genetically inherited. Indeed, it has been scientifically proven that certain people possess genes that influence brain functioning, engendering such personality traits as difficult temperament, impulsivity, novelty seeking, and lack of empathy. These biological characters can become a primary factor conducive to one’s proclivity towards aggressiveness and misdemeanor. In addition, there are also instances of genetic features identifies as hereditary. A notable example of this can be seen in the case of the psychopathic genome, an inborn gene which produces less protein to break down signal transmission chemicals. The excess of these chemicals are believed to trigger arrogant behavior and violent tendency, raising the possibility of committing crime.
On balance, advocates of both standpoints undeniably have sound arguments for their convictions. Personally, I would contend that criminality derives from not just one cause but a combination of different contributors, which can be addressed by a positive and favorable environment for good deeds to develop.
