The debate as to choices regarding students’ path after high school graduation has become increasingly heated. While many people argue that professional success can be guaranteed by tertiary education, others assume that having a job right after school would be more beneficial. The following essay elaborates on both viewpoints before stating my personal opinion on this contention.
On the one hand, there are two main grounds for those who attribute a successful career to studying at university or college. Firstly, university students tend to acquire higher employment opportunities. During the course of education, they are equipped with not only academic knowledge but also such essential skills as team-working, presenting and researching methods, thereby gaining a competitive advantage over other applicants when seeking jobs. Secondly, third-level education also enhances graduates’ prospects for high-income occupations. Since several intellectually demanding professions namely scientists, doctors, and engineers require university qualifications, a Bachelor’s degree should open up an avenue for young graduates to embrak on a career in such rewarding fields.
On the other hand, it is also justifiable to claim that securing employment after high school provides students with more advantages, one of which lies in its practical applications. Instead of spending time learning theoretical concepts, students with low academic abilities can obtain hands-on experience together with other non-academic skills such as interpersonal and communicative skills, thus becoming more well-versed in their chosen fields. In addition, high school graduates can achieve financial independence earlier than their tertiary counterparts when getting straight into work after school. Indeed, having an occupation can enable these individuals to generate income on their own, which frees them from unnecessary reliance on their parents, especially those with financial difficulties.
In conclusion, although both routes offer potential benefits for students, I strongly believe that the decision as to their future trajectory should be made based on individual backgrounds and preferences alike. While a university degree is important for those wishing to pursue intellectually demanding jobs, hands-on experience should be a better choice for those without strong learning abilities.
