In several nations, individuals below the age of 16 have accounted for an ever-growing proportion of their population, exerting profound impacts on national development. The following essay elaborates on the present and expected influence this tendency has on these countries, which I would deem as a detrimental trend.
Regarding the current context, a youthful population may prove beneficial in terms of national supply of labor. In this tech-driven and information-laden era, numerous young citizens are assumed tech-savvy and digital natives, who possess certain flexibility and adaptability to technological innovations. This source of active energy and creativity can serve as a powerful talent pool and guarantee a continuous workforce supply, thereby facilitating social progress. However, this so-called youth bulge can adversely affect the country’s current public system. Since youngsters entail education and basic healthcare such as immunisations, which are prohibitive to provide sufficiently, this can impose heavy strains on third-world and developing countries, especially resource-restrained ones where young people occupies the majority of the population.
In the foreseeable future, soaring proportion of young-aged citizens may come may come at the expense of other socio-economic implications. Indeed, when such a profusion of these individuals reach child-bearing age, fertility rates are certain to rise dramatically, engendering issues of overcrowding. This scenario, in turn, would continue to place further pressure on the country’s public sectors to accommodate the surging demand, hence creating a vicious cycle of resource shortage and poverty. In addition, the youth bulge could also pose a serious challenge for the nation to properly manage such a huge supply of labor. With a significant source of working-age people, substantially more jobs need to be created, which would be an uphill struggle for developing countries with high youth unemployment rates.
To conclude, the ever-increasing percentage of young citizens is likely to bring more harm than good to national growth. Therefore, I am convinced that appropriate government regulations ought to be implemented to curb this trend for the sake of sustainable development.
