There have been growing arguments about whether footages are more effective learning tools in terms of exploring foreign ways of living than written documents. Personally, I wholeheartedly agree with this opinion and elaborate on the reasons for my personal view.
One explanation for my agreement lies in the amount of visual and auditory information which could be incorporated within videos. Specifically, footage could provide viewers with a visual depiction of the environment in which people live, including landscapes and infrastructures as well as architecture and living conditions, therefore delivering them a richer sensory experience of visual and auditory elements simultaneously. As a result, audiences are able to see and hear the surroundings, people’s expressions, and other contextual details that may not be adequately conveyed through written transcriptions alone. Hence, visual and auditory cues can offer a more immersive and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter, which could eventually contribute to the effortless knowledge absorption and thorough understanding of viewers.
Another reason for my perspective is that the audiovisual medium can evoke emotions and experiences that written documents might not be able to convey as powerfully. In detail, real-time events and daily life situations would be depicted in filmed documents, allowing learners to witness authentic moments as they unfold. Consequently, the sense of presence and connection with the people and their way of life would be enhanced, which could also evoke emotional responses within viewers during their learning process. Therefore, the connection between viewers and the subject matter deepens, promoting a sense of empathy, cross-cultural understanding, global interconnectedness, while such emotional aspects are usually missing in written texts.
In conclusion, I would argue that video records could outshine their written counterparts regarding providing information about other ethnics across the globe.
