The acceleration of urbanization has resulted in a housing problem in many major cities. I am totally in favor of the view that housing problems in metropolitan areas can only be addressed by government intervention, thanks to their legislative power and financial resources.

Firstly, the government is in a unique position to issue laws and policies that promote the supply of affordable housing. Specifically, these regulations and strategies can include the development of affordable housing programs, the implementation of rent control measures, and the enforcement of zoning regulations to ensure adequate and reasonable housing options. If these interventions are not in place, there is a high risk that the private sector may dominate the housing market by building high-rise buildings or luxury garden apartments that cater only to wealthy individuals. This would exacerbate the shortage of affordable housing for people with average incomes in large cities. Therefore, the authorities play a prominent role in increasing cities’ efficiency in land use, as well as providing a diverse range of housing options for all urban residents.

Secondly, only the government is able to establish effective financial schemes to assist homeownership in large cities. This may involve introducing creative funding methods like public subsidies, rental assistance, and down payment assistance for homeownership that cannot be provided by other industries, but rather only by the government. By implementing these financial assistance programs, the authorities can make housing more accessible to low- and moderate-income households, reducing the risk of homelessness in such a metropolis. Singapore is a prime example, where the authorities provide substantial subsidy grants, low-interest loans, quality social houses to ensure housing accessibility for all citizens, helping the country to have the lowest rate of homelessness in the world.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that without the intervention of authorities, the housing crisis in large cities will continue to worsen. Therefore, governments must take proactive measures to address affordability issues in big cities and create a more balanced and affordable housing market for all.
