The concern over schools’ curriculum planning has long aroused heated controversies, in which it is opined that all subjects should be made compulsory at school, whereas others argue that students should only learn subjects aligning with their ability or interest. The following essay elaborates on both viewpoints before expressing my personal perspective on this contentious matter.
On the one hand, it is valid to claim that children should be compelled to study all subjects in an academic setting. Firstly, if youngsters were to have the freedom to choose their own classes and courses, they might be tempted to prioritize only easy or familiar ones, avoiding challenging subjects necessary for their intellectual and personal development. Consequently, this could engender knowledge gaps and an incomplete understanding of fundamental concepts, thus emphasizing the importance of teaching all subjects to ensure a well-rounded education. Secondly, exposure to a wide array of domains of knowledge also provides students with nuanced skills and competencies. Since excessive concentration on a specific subject can limit children’s acquisition of diverse skillsets, learning all fields can offer them interdisciplinary opportunities, thereby fostering their critical thinking and adaptability to different contexts.
On the other hand, allowing students to select subjects based on their aptitude and passion also provides them with several merits, notable of which lies in enhanced motivation. Indeed, by exploring their interests and tailoring their education to individual needs, children can select courses appropriate to their career aspirations, personal goals and learning preferences. This heightened sense of autonomy can ignite a passion for learning, resulting in increased dedication and eventually higher academic achievement. In addition, permitting youngsters to choose their classes also enables them to specialize in specific areas of interest. They can delve deeper into subjects they are passionate about, gaining in-depth knowledge and expertise in those fields, which is valuable for their future career paths or further academic pursuits.
In conclusion, advocates of both opinions irrefutably have sound arguments for their convictions. However, I would personally contend that certain prerequisite subjects should be made obligatory while others can be optional for the sake of students’ overall educational growth.
