Opinion is largely divided on which groups of people have the most profound impacts on our lives. While some people put their belief in politicians, others think that the contribution of scientists is far greater. This essay analayzes both lines of thinking before my personal perspective is given.
On the one hand, it is justifiable to believe that politicians are among the most influential groups who could do the greatest good for the general public. As members of the government, politicians, through policy tools and registration system, could solve a wide range of problems in many aspects of life such as education and security; thus, improving the general well-being of their country. For instance, the free education policy and strict punishments towards drug trafficking in Singapore have significantly benefited local people and profoundly transformed this country into a powerful leader among Asian neighbors. Such case studies have shown that statesmen could be main actors in improving people’s lives and maintaining social order for higher national prosperity.
However, scientists are believed by others to have the greatest influence in the world. Thanks to many of their revolutionary innovations, scientists have enormously contributed to the global development, beyond geological boundaries. For instance, the invention of the Internet and technological devices have profoundly changed the way we see the world and how things work in the digital age. Furthermore, unlike politicians who sometimes ignore certain facts and features from their people when pursuing their own agendas, scientific experts, with in-depth knowledge of their areas of expertise, could bring such issues into light and alert the general public of any potential risks. For instance, while many experts around the world have shown their growing concern about the climate change, Donald Trump, the president of the US, expresses his denial on such a problem in order to allocate more budgets to military projects rather than environmental protection programs.
In conclusion, although both views have their own merits, I personally argue that scientists are those who positively influence the world the most with their life-changing innovations and commitment to people’s wellbeing on a global scale. By contrast, the power of certain politicians might be limited to their country’s territory.
