Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports, while others think people should have freedom to do any sports or activity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Dangerous sports have become a concern for individuals and governments. Some argue that these perilous sports should be prohibited, while others argue that individuals should have full rights to choose what sports the engage in. The essay discusses reasons for both points of view before my personal perspective is given.
There are certain arguments supporting lawful prohibition of dangerous sports. The principal reason for forbidding extreme sports is that they can be highly dangerous and sometimes life-threatening. Joining thrilling sports such as drafting or racing is associated with possible severe accidents including brain injuries that may end a person’s life unexpectedly or leave them with life-long incurable disabilities which usually put a weighty financial burden on the patient’s family and society. More than that, it is not just the participants who are at risk, but spectators might also be seriously injured. If, for example, during a car race, a Formula 1 car crashes, the competing driver may not escape unharmed, and there is also a chance that a bouncing tyre or debris could fly into the crowd. Given this level of danger, it is understandable why people call for the authorities to take action to prohibit dangerous sports.
However, I am of the counter argument that people should be allowed to freely have their own sport preferences. The strongest argument is that participating in dangerous sports is a pastime bringing joy and pleasure to many people. If anyone wishes to free fall from a plane at 30,000 feet, then he or she should be free to make that choice. In other words, it should be accepted that it is not the place of the government to control how citizens lead their leisure activities. A further point is that there is a low probability of injury in many so-called dangerous sports since the technology and quality of safety equipment have improved. People might be at greater risk when carrying out everyday activities such as crossing the road or cooking a meal than when bungee jumping or drafting.
In conclusion, both sides have their own merits. However, on balance, I would advocate for complete individual freedom in selecting sports to play since it is part of individuals’ right to choose their leisure activity and associated with a low probability of dangers.
