The chart below shows the number of trips made by children in one country in 1990 and 2020 to travel to and from school using different modes of transport. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Walking and Car passengers:

• 1990: walking the most popularity // around 12.5 million // nearly triple car passengers at around 4 million
• 2020: car passengers remarkable upsurge to around 11 million // overtake walking to become the most popular // walking 50% reduction // at around 6 million

• Cycling and walking to catch bus: around 6 million in 1990 // cycling the most dramatic decrease to about 2 million // walking to catch bus halved to around 3 million in 2020
• Bus: second in 1990 // less significant drop from approximately 7 million to 5 million in 2020

The bar chart shows a comparison of the number of trips taken by children to and from school using five distinct modes of transportation between 1990 and 2020. Overall, car passengers had the smallest number of trips in 1990, but driving was the only means of transport that witnessed an upward trend, making it the most common mode of transport for children in 2020 by overtaking walking.

Regarding the two primary modes of transportation, in 1990, walking to school gained the most popularity among children, recorded at around 12.5 million trips, which nearly triple that of car passengers at around 4 million. This bottom-ranked category then witnessed a remarkable upsurge to around 11 million trips and overtook walking to become the most popular mode in 2020 when children lost their interest in walking, resulting in a 50% reduction in its trip numbers at around 6 million.

Regarding three remaining categories, around 6 million trips were made by children who cycled or walked to catch buses for school in 1990, before the former experienced the most dramatic decrease in its number to about 2 million, and the latter also halved to around 3 million trips in 2020. A less significant drop was seen in the figure for buses, which used to be the second most commonly used form of transportation, from approximately 7 million trips in 1990 to 5 million trips in 2020.
