The rapid growth of population, along with time, has eroded the physical condition of numerous public buildings. Thus, in order to satisfy a rising demand for social gatherings, it is held that funding should be allocated to constructing new public facilities rather than transforming the old ones. From a personal perspective, I totally disagree with this viewpoint since it would erode some local cultural values while adding stress to environmental issues in big cities.
Building new public spots, thus abandoning the existing ones will diminish their long-lasting charm of a local heritage. Due to their historical background, many communal areas are more than a place for people to spend their leisure time or to carry out political polls, they represent the city’s culture through one-time building techniques, fabrics, and designs, which are probably hard to replicate with modern technology, so as their historical vibes. Therefore, maintenance activities, for example reupholstering and replacing ramshackle furniture, would conserve the buildings’ classical look while still in good condition, as can be seen in the Paris government’s general care program for the Louvre museum instead of rebuilding such an iconic architecture.
In addition, unlike constructing new public buildings, restoring run-down ones would save space for crammed cities. Indeed, the construction of public areas does require spacious land and an outlook over breathtaking surroundings, whilst developed cities, which have a growing demand for such places, fail to meet the afore-mentioned criteria because of their large population, resulting in land shortage. Besides, putting up a large-capacity public building does seemingly no harm to the environment, but building a large number of them does because of the energy needed for the manufacture of iron, steel and cement and the amount of dust debris released. For this reason, expenses should not be spared on such environmental threats that the construction industry brings, but be deployed in transforming old public facilities into a more sustainable place.
To conclude, for the sake of the Earth’s health and the living conditions in major cities, it is necessary to consider the cost incurred by establishing more public buildings before spending on it. In this case, I believe that it is better to invest in renovating the existing architecture owing to the entrenched traditional beauty that they hold.
