The exploration of outer space has indisputably gained in growing popularity over recent decades. In such a context, it is opined that improving the technology for this activity is unjustifiably exorbitant and this financial resource had better be allocated to other sectors. From a personal perspective, I fully concur with this viewpoint and the following essay will elaborate on my stance.
To begin with, the practical benefits derived from space exploration by no means justify the enormous expenses involved. It stands to reason that conducting a space flight encompasses a wide array of aspects, ranging from rocket fuel to chemical-based propulsion to enable the launch, which costs a tremendous amount of money. Such funding could otherwise be more effectively directed to other industries that directly benefit human lives namely healthcare, education or transportation. Considering the unreasonably huge consumption of crude materials, technical and human resources with insignificant outcomes, it is not worth the investment to develop technology for space exploration.
Another point is that it is also unjustifiable to equate the importance of exploring outer space to the possibility of life on other planets. Some argue that global warming and climate change have irreversibly damaged the environment, heightening the need for space exploration and a new planet to evacuate and ensure life sustenance for human race’s posterity. Nevertheless, I would contend that in lieu of searching elsewhere in space for chances of survival, humans should focus attention on current issues on Earth to thoroughly address them. Only when both individuals and governments make concerted attempts to adopt prompt and vigorous measures can we make our planet a more livable living space for all.
In conclusion, I am convinced that the opportunity cost of space exploration is too high compared to the potential benefits it confers. Hence, this financial resource should instead be allocated towards improving human welfare and addressing social, and environmental issues for the sake of sustainable human prosperity.
