IELTS Speaking: Giải Đề Part 2 – Making D.I.Y

Sample answer

Well, honestly, making DIY is not my strong suit, but actually, there was one time that I attempted to make a dreamcatcher with the support of my older sister. 

For your information, a dreamcatcher is more like a decorative item in the bedroom. People believe that hanging it on the wall behind our bed would help us keep evil spirits at bay. Well, much as superstitious it sounds to me, I was still taken with it. I had never heard of it until I was in highschool when I watched a K-drama in which the female lead made a dream-catcher as a gift for her crush. Every movie buff became frantically obsessed with the item after the show, and I wasn’t an exception. The reason why I was so adamant about making one is two-fold. For one, It was all the rage at that time and I didn’t wanna miss out. And another reason is that I just simply wanted to give it a try, seeing if I had any whorl for creating hand-made stuff. 

The process wasn’t at all a walk in the park. I mean, I would have given up after 5 minutes into it if it hadn’t been for my sister’s support the whole time.  We got to gather enough materials including clothing bands, glues, colored threads, to boot before we could dive into the actual process of making a dreamcatcher. It probably took us 4-5 hours to complete a hand-size one. It was inspired by the mysterious vibe of a tropical forest by combining the wooden circular frame and green threads around it and creating a net web in the middle. We also attached some colorful threads to the frame in order to create several lines of fringe. 

The result definitely exceeded my expectations. Never had I ever thought that I could make such a delicate item with my bare hands. The process was indeed demanding, as it required a lot of meticulousness. So I was far from being a detail-oriented person but after this occasion, I was full of pride. Up to now, I haven’t got a chance to make any DIY due to my packed schedule, but if given a chance, I’ll certainly wanna create some hand-makes for people that I love. 

Phân tích bài nói 

Cấu trúc bài nói đi theo các câu hỏi trong đề, tuy nhiên liên hệ tới người nói thông qua biểu đạt cảm xúc, ký ức, trải nghiệm. 

• Mở đầu: 

Thay vì đi vào trực tiếp bằng những câu quen thuộc “I’d like to tell you…”, bạn có thể giới thiệu về khả năng của bản thân một chút làm tiền đề cho cả bài nói.

• What it is + Why you made it

Nếu vật bạn mô tả khá xa lạ, bạn có thể giới thiệu sơ lược về chức năng, hoặc hình dáng trông như thế nào.

Ngoải ra, dể trả lời câu hỏi thứ 2, bạn có thể nêu ra những tác động ngoại cảnh như do ảnh hưởng từ phim ảnh, từ bạn bè, hoặc tại sao bạn lại biết đến nó. Đây cũng là một cơ hội để sử dụng các thì past perfect để kể chuyện.

• Describe the process when you made it

Đây là câu hỏi bạn có thể dễ dàng đi sâu nhất vì có yếu tốt story-telling. Bạn có thể kể một mạch những thao tác chính bạn phải làm dùng các từ nối (sequencers)  như “before, after…”

We got to gather enough materials including clothing bands, glues, colored threads, to boot before we could dive into the actual process of making a dreamcatcher.

Tuy nhiên, đừng quên miêu tả cảm xúc hoặc bình luận về quá trình để tăng độ sâu, và thể hiện sự tư duy đa chiều khả năng đánh gía của bản thân. Nói về quy trình làm gì, bạn có thể bình luận xem nó dễ hay khó đối với bạn hoặc đa số mọi người.

• And explain why it is important

Cuối cùng, bạn có thể tóm lại quá trình và lồng với ý trả lời cho câu hỏi”Why do you like it”: 

The result definitely exceeded my expectations.

Ngoài ra, có thể đưa ra cảm xúc khi bạn đã hoàn thành xong món đồ và liên hệ với hiện tại (up to now, I haven’t…) và tương lai (If given a chance)  để tăng điểm về ngữ pháp.
