Sample answer

This question puts me in mind of the time that I booked two flights from Wellington to Sydney. Instead of a direct flight, I daringly went for a longer route, with two separate arrival destinations, including Queenstown and Sydney in the next flight, just leaving enough time for me to go through the check-in process. 

Well, considering the potential risks, at that time, I thought that those would be the overcrowded airports in two cities, which might take a long time for me to get aboard. Another mishap that could happen would have to do with the delay of the first flight. This means that It might cut it fine for me to catch the next one to arrive in Sydney, or even worse, I would have to purchase a new fare at last minute with an exorbitantly high cost. 

Anyway, all things considered, I still headed for that decision as it would give me a chance to set foot in the World richest playground  and see their majestic landscapes with my naked eyes, and not to mention, the air ticket was considerably more economical. 

So, what was the result? Honestly, I had been sitting on edge throughout the whole journey until I landed in Queenstown. Lucky me, everything panned out; the planes took off and arrived according to the schedule; and the weather was incredibly pleasant that day.  It was indeed a thrilling experience for me. I couldn’t help but feel grateful ‘coz imagine things went south, that would be a disaster to me.

• Mở đầu: 

Bài nói đi thẳng vào giới thiệu thời gian. Điều này giúp bạn tạo ra được bối cảnh câu chuyện bao gồm lựa chọn mạo hiểm (Risk) là gì, khi nào, ở đâu.

Để trả lời câu hỏi này, bạn có thể liệt kê tuần tự những khả năng xấu có thể xảy ra. Vì đây là những trường hợp chưa xảy ra trong thời điểm ở quá khứ, nên chúng ta lưu ý dùng modal past, ví dụ: 

• will -> would

• can -> could

• may -> might 

Vì mang tính liệt kê nên bạn có thể sẽ phải paraphrase từ vựng liên quan tới trường hợp xấu có thể được sử dụng như: 

• potential risks 

• mishap 

• or even worse,… 
• Well, considering the potential risks, at that time, I thought that those would be the overcrowded airports in two cities, which might take a long time for me to get onboard. Another mishap that could happen would have to do with the delay of the first flight. • Why you decided to take this risk

Đây là câu hỏi cần sử dụng ý tương phản hoặc concession để thể hiện ý “tại sao khi biết được những trường hợp xấu tren, bạn vẫn ra quyết định này?” Do đó, bạn cần sử dụng các markers/linkers tương ứng:

• All things considered, I still headed for… 

• Despite the aforementioned dangers,… 

• Having said that,…

• That being said,… 

• Regardless, I still… 

Sau đó, bạn có thể đưa ra lý do tại sao quyết định này vẫn là tối ưu hơn cho bạn. 

• Anyway, all things considered, I still headed for that decision as it would give me a chance to set foot in the World richest playground  and see their majestic landscapes with my naked eyes, and not to mention, the air ticket was considerably more economical. 
• And explain why the result of taking this risk was positive

Kết quả của hành động/quyết định đó có thể bao gồm cảm xúc (tiêu cực/tích cực/ cả hai). Đây cũng là cơ hội để chúng ta lồng kể chuyện (story-telling) vào bài nói của mình khi diễn tả 2-3 các chuỗi hành động cùng lúc. Bạn nên chọn những hành động mấu chốt, có liên quan tới câu chuyện, tránh sa đà vào kể chi tiết (ví dụ: cả chuyến đi) sẽ đẫn tới mất thời gian cho những ý khác cũng như mất độ trôi chảy vì phải vừa nhớ câu chuyện vừa kể sao cho mạch lạc. 

Cuối cùng, đừng quên kết lại sự kiện bằng một câu bình luận ngắn gọn (general comment) ví dụ:

• It was indeed a thrilling experience for me

• It was such a once-in-a-lifetime experience 

• It’s a memory that will forever be etched in my mind. 

Nếu còn thời gian, bạn có thể thêm vào một câu giả định cho đề bài này, ví dụ khi mọi chuyện không như ý muốn ngươc lại với thực tế thì như thế nào: 

• I couldn’t help but feel grateful ‘coz imagine things went south, that would be a disaster to me.
