TOPIC: Describe a way that you find effective in starting in a conversation with a stranger.
You should say:
SAMPLE
You know, one really effective way I start a conversation with a stranger is by using open–ended questions. (What is the way?) Instead of just hitting them with yes or no questions, I try to ask stuff that gets them talking, like, “What do you think about this event?” or “How did you get into this hobby?” It just opens the door for a deeper chat.
I actually picked this up in a communication class back in college. (Where did you learn that way?) The teacher really stressed how important it is to ask questions that get people engaged, and it just stuck with me. Now, I use this technique pretty often, especially at parties or when I’m meeting new folks. (How often do you use it?) It’s kind of my go–to move!
I think it works well because people love sharing their opinions and stories. (Why do you think it is effective?) When I ask open–ended questions, it makes them feel valued and involved, which usually leads to a more relaxed and fun conversation. Plus, I get to learn some cool stuff about them, which is always interesting!
Sometimes, I even share a little about myself after they answer, which helps keep the conversation flowing. Like, if someone mentions a favorite movie, I might jump in with my thoughts or ask if they’ve seen anything new lately. It creates this nice back–and–forth vibe, and before you know it, we’re chatting like old friends!

(Example) For instance, asking follow-up questions based on what the other person has shared shows that we value their input.
(Point) Cultural differences can greatly influence communication styles. (Explain) In some cultures, people might prefer direct communication, while in others, indirect language is more common. (Example) For example, in Japan, people tend to avoid confrontation and may use more subtle language to express disagreement, which can be confusing for those from more straightforward cultures.
(Point) Body language is a key element in communication, often speaking louder than words. (Explain) Non-verbal cues like eye contact, posture, and gestures can convey interest, agreement, or even disagreement without saying a word. (Example) For instance, crossing your arms during a conversation might signal that you’re feeling defensive or closed off.
(Point) The best way to handle disagreements is through open communication and empathy. (Explain) A calm and respectful approach can help de-escalate the situation, allowing both sides to express their views.
