4. IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample & Ideas: Festivals

SAMPLE & IDEAS

1. Is it important for children to learn about traditional festivals at school?

[Lead-in] I believe it is a must for young generations to learn about traditional festival in the schooling environment

[Explain] Instill a sense of gratitude → have a better understanding about their ancestor, older generations and life in the previous era → create empathy in these students, leading them to appreciate their life more, be more respectful to the elderly, their parents // Introduce healthy forms of entertainment → many children nowadays are addicted to the screen → traditional festivals are a perfect solution for them to engage with different people and understand more about the surrounding world → help them build up their knowledge pool

  • a sense of gratitude: sự biết ơn
  • life in the previous era: cuộc sống ở thời đại trước
  • the surrounding world: thế giới xung quanh
  • build up their knowledge pool: xây dựng kho kiến thức

2. Do children like to learn about traditional festivals?

[Lead-in] It depends on the way these festivals are presented, but I believe innately, all children appreciate these social activities

[Explain] Children are naturally creative, curious and would love to come in contact with many people, figure out new things including traditions and festivals → Love to know more and be able to participate in such events // Sadly, I believe we don’t pay much attention to this topic in the curriculum → lessons about these festival are brief and only done in a meager manner → reduce children’s interest in these otherwise extremely interesting to them events

  • done in a meager manner: thực hiện một cách sơ sài

3. Why do people hold events to celebrate?

[Lead-in] Because they are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions

[Explain] For big achievements usually come with a great sense of pride, the best way to express this is to organize equally great events. Take the New Year celebration for example. In order to celebrate past year achievements and prepare for an upcoming lucky year, people around the world take days off, have firework displays, celebrate with the best foods in the newly bought clothes. This is not only a celebration but also a wish for a successful coming years in different cultures

  • glorious heritage, culture and traditions: di sản, văn hóa và truyền thống vẻ vang
  • a great sense of pride: niềm tự hào
  • take days off: nghỉ phép
  • have firework displays: bắn pháo hoa

4. Are traditional festivals disappearing?

[Lead-in] Sadly, I believe it is happening at an extremely quick rate

[Explain] Though globalization is bringing great economic and social benefit, traditions are taking a toll for this on-going trend. With early access to modern technology, lives of young generations are worlds apart from their older counterparts. Therefore, previously established traditions are no longer relevant in the modern context. While this is irreversible, it is still a disheartening scene to me. Luckily, certain major events still holds up and only changes slightly to fit the modern context

  • take a toll: gây tổn hại, ảnh hưởng xấu
  • on-going trend: xu hướng đang diễn ra
  • a disheartening scene: cảnh tượng làm thất vọng

5. Is music important in traditional festivals?

[Lead-in] For certain festivals, music is the soul of it, but for others, it would not make a big difference

[Explain] Personally, I am not aware of that many festivals, however, when the new year holiday comes, the new year is no longer the new year without certain songs and rhythm being played on those days. On the other hand, for buffalo fighting festival or songkran in Thailand, music is optional

  • songkran in Thailand: lễ hội té nước Thái Lan

6. Do you think good food and drinks are important for celebrations?

[Lead-in] I 100% agree with this, that each festival has its own signature dish

[Explain] Of all festivals that I know, not one single one is complete without its unique type of food. With Tet in Vietnam we have banh chung, banh day, pickled onions, with Christmas we have the gingerbread man and the Yule log. Somehow the food is something that brings people together, instill a sense of warmth and safety to strengthen that bond between people and people

  • pickled onions: hành ngâm
  • gingerbread man: bánh gừng
  • Yule log: bánh khúc cây Giáng sinh
  • a sense of warmth: cảm giác ấm cúng
