SAMPLE & IDEAS

[INTRO]

It was actually the first public speech that I went off the script and spoke my mind

[STORY]

[what] We were having a public speaking contest at my High school at that time and I was chosen to be one of the contestants.

[how] The topic was about who is the happiest person. As usual, I asked the opinions of some people and finally settled on the idea that the happiest person is the most successful person. Personally, I did not agree but I tried to follow and wrote up a script about that. As a result, before I was on stage, I got cold feet and even forgot some of the prepared script. The obvious happened, after breaking the ice among the audience with some famous quotes and some interactions, I forgot everything that was written.

I knew I was thrown at the deep end after standing still without talking in a whole minute. Then I screwed it all, and just let it out, telling the audience what I thought that the happiest person is the one who has their family with them. It was a heart-felt speech and I got a standing ovation afterwards. It was such an unforgettable experience.

4. IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample & Ideas: Public speaking

SAMPLE & IDEAS

1. What benefits does the internet bring to communication?

[Lead-in] There are two obvious benefits that comes to my mind thinking about this issue

[Explain] Firstly, the internet has made communication more efficient and accessible. With platforms like email, instant messaging, and social media, people can connect with friends, family, and colleagues around the world instantly. Secondly, the internet has democratized access to information. Previously, knowledge was limited to what was available in libraries or through professional expertise. Now, anyone with an internet connection can access a wealth of information on any topic imaginable

  • democratized access: tiếp cận được dân chủ hóa
  • professional expertise: chuyên môn chuyên nghiệp
  • access a wealth of information: tiếp cận một nguồn thông tin phong phú

2. Which one is better, being a communicator or a listener?

[Lead-in] That sounds like a classic question haha. I believe it depends on which context are we talking about

[Explain] The communicator is responsible for conveying their message clearly and coherently. They use various communication techniques such as verbal and non-verbal cues to express their thoughts and ideas effectively. So it would be perfect for them to make public speeches and get ideas across. But for a more intimate connection, the listener can actively engage in the conversation by paying attention to what is being said. Active listening involves not only hearing but also understanding and responding appropriately to the message being conveyed. By focusing on both verbal and non-verbal cues from the communicator, listeners can gather a deeper understanding of the one they are communicating to.

  • verbal and non-verbal cues: dấu hiệu bằng lời nói và không lời (ngôn từ nói ra và ngôn ngữ cơ thể)
  • intimate connection: mối quan hệ thân mật

3. What qualities does a person need to have to be a good communicator?

[Lead-in] I believe there are certain qualities of a good communicator that are essential in fostering understanding, building relationships, and achieving desired outcomes

[Explain] Firstly, clarity is a fundamental aspect of effective communication. A good communicator can convey their message in a concise and understandable manner, avoiding ambiguity or confusion. Secondly, listening skills are crucial for effective communication. A good communicator actively listens to others without interruption or judgment, allowing them to fully understand the perspectives and needs of those they are communicating with. Empathy is another quality that distinguishes a good communicator. Being able to put oneself in another person’s shoes allows for better understanding of their concerns, emotions, and perspectives

  • put oneself in another person’s shoes: đặt mình vào vị trí của người khác

4. What qualities do people need to speak in public?

[Lead-in] I believe the most important qualities for public speaking are ones able to keep the audience engaged and convey your message in a more convincing manner

[Explain] Flexibility is one important quality in effective public speaking. Adapting one’s style of communication based on the needs of different individuals or situations shows versatility as a communicator and also to deal with different situations that come up during the talk. Although it is one to hundreds or one to thousands, non-verbal communication also plays a significant role in conveying messages effectively. A good public speaker pays attention to body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, and other non-verbal cues in order to align their verbal messages with their non-verbal signals.

  • body language: ngôn ngữ cơ thể
  • facial expressions: biểu cảm khuôn mặt

5. What kinds of people often give speeches?

[Lead-in] I believe confident people can pluck up the courage and do that the most

[Explain] I mean, confidence is an essential quality exhibited by skilled communicators. Confident communicators speak with conviction while maintaining humility; they express their ideas firmly yet receptively encourage feedback from others. So they get even more experience and go on to do more speeches.// Confidence is not just an innate personality but also a skill that everyone could practice // one of the key factors to have an effective public speech.

  • pluck up the courage: lấy hết can đảm
  • innate personality: tính cách bẩm sinh

6. How important is it to be a good listener when communicating?

[Lead-in] I believe they are the ones who can change opinions and reshape people’s personality

[Explain] Active listening involves not only hearing but also understanding and responding appropriately to the message being conveyed. By focusing on both verbal and non-verbal cues from the communicator, listeners can gather a deeper understanding of the message being communicated. As a result, they show empathy and go on to offer advice on the deepest level possible to their communicating partner

  • active listening: nghe chủ động
  • go on to: tiến hành
