Dạng bài Discuss Both Views là 1 trong 4 dạng bài phổ biến nhất trong bài thi IELTS WRITING TASK 2. Thì sinh phải đưa đưa ra quan điểm cá nhân về 2 khía cảnh trái ngược nhau của một vấn đề cụ thể. Dạng đề có thể nhận biết qua câu “Discuss Both Views and give your own opinion”.

Cách xử lý dạng bài (Discuss Both Views)

1. Bố cục một bài Discuss both views

Tương tự như dạng bài khác, một bài Discuss both views bắt đầu với mở bài (Introduction, Thân bài (Body) – từ 2 đến 3 đoạn (tuỳ cách chọn và sắp xếp ideas) và kết thúc bằng kết bài (Conclusion).

2. Ví dụ cách tiếp cận cơ bản với một bài Discuss both views

Đề bài: Some people feel that the design of newly constructed buildings in big cities should be controlled by governments. Others believe those who finance the construction of a building should be free to design buildings. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

3. Các bước tiếp cận dạng Discuss both views

Bước 1: Xác định câu hỏi và keywords quan trọng trong đề bài Discuss both views

• Question: Who should be given the power to dictate the design of buildings in huge metropolitans? Discuss both views.                                                  Keywords: the design of newly constructed buildings – big cities – governments – those who finance the construction
• Các vấn đề cần được bàn luận:

1. Lý do chính phủ nên quản lý những thiết kế của các toà nhà trong thành phố lớn.
2. Lý do những thiết kế này nên được tự do lựa chọn bởi những nhà đầu tư.
3. Ý kiến cá nhân về vấn đề trên.

Bước 2: Lập dàn ý (dựa trên bố cục của một bài Discuss both views)

• Introduction: nêu context (bối cảnh) và paraphrase lại đề để nêu ra 2 views ở trên.
• be responsible for = have control over = dictate
• big cities = huge metropolitans = metropolis
• newly constructed buildings = novel high-rise buildings
• the design of a building = the appearance of a building = how a building looks

Body part 1: Bàn luận về quan điểm 1 (chủ công trình nên có toàn quyền quyết định trong việc chọn thiết kế cho công trình đó)

Suggested Ideas:

• Công ty tư nhân có yêu cầu // chuyên môn để đảm bảo được độ an toàn tối đa.
• Việc tự chủ xây dựng sẽ đem đến những thiết kế mới mẻ, độc đáo mà không bị ép vào bất kỳ khuôn mẫu nào của chính phủ.

Body part 2: Bàn luận về quan điểm 2 (quyền kiểm soát thiết kế những toà nhà trong thành phố nên nằm trong tay chính phủ)

Suggested Ideas:

• Với những thành phố chịu thiệt hại về thiên tai, các toà nhà xây dựng phải được giám sát nghiêm ngặt bởi chính phủ theo một bộ quy định an toàn ⇒ đảm bảo an toàn cho người dân và tăng độ vững bền của toà nhà đó.
• Tạo nên một vẻ đồng điệu trong quang cảnh (Example: Hoi An)

Conclusion: tổng kết lại 2 quan điểm đã nói ở trên, đưa ra quan điểm và giải thích. Với cách viết Two body paragraphs như bài trên thì quan điểm cá nhân của người viết sẽ được đưa vào Conclusion. Vì vậy conclusion luôn luôn phải có ít nhất 2 câu. NÊN TRÁNH CÁCH VIẾT KẾT BÀI 1 CÂU.

Bước 3: Viết bài

(Introduction) Nowadays, with the fast-growing economy of some major cities around the world, more modern buildings are being erected to accommodate a burgeoning population. However, there has been debate over whether local governments or construction companies should be responsible for the design of buildings. (Thesis statement) This essay discusses both sides of this contentious argument before my own perspective is presented.

(Body Par 01 – View 01) Many argue that companies building projects in big cities should have complete freedom to design buildings as they wish. One of the reasons for this is that they often have the expertise to design buildings efficiently and ensure the highest level of safety thanks to advanced technology in construction. In this way, there are a few reasons left to prevent them from exercising their creativity. Another reason is to allow buildings in an area to have a distinctive flavor and not to be constrained by governmental regulations that may result in a cookie-cutter approach to buildings. An example of this style of building is in Beijing, China where whole suburbs look identical.

(Body Par 02 – View 02) Others argue that authorities in major cities should safeguard the general public’s interests and enforce regulations on buildings’ exterior design accordingly. In areas that have been frequently affected by disasters throughout history, buildings have to follow strict regulations to withstand nearly all-natural disasters, including earthquakes and floods. For example, houses in disaster-prone areas like Tokyo have to comply with strict regulations regarding their wooden materials and two-story design. In addition, if building design is regulated by the government, the whole city planning can be considered in the decision. In historical towns such as Hoi An, new houses are required to follow the traditional architectural styles to blend in with the other buildings and avoid landscape pollution.

(Conclusion) In conclusion, I believe both sides of the argument have their own merits. (present personal opinion & explain why) However, on balance, I believe that government involvement is crucial to ensure the safety issues of new buildings and control the overall plan of building design in major cities.

4. Lưu ý cho dạng bài Discuss both views:

Nếu bạn chọn viết 2 body paragraphs như SAMPLE rằng bài viết nêu quan điểm cá nhân trong kết bài.Thì khi viết Topic Sentence, bạn nên đề cập đến vấn đề trong topic bằng con mắt khách quan. Ví dụ: Chúng ta nên lựa chọn viết “Many argue that..”, hoặc “Others seem to think…”, chứ KHÔNG viết “I am convinced that..”, vì phần personal opinion sẽ được thêm vào trong đoạn kết bài.

5. Cách sắp xếp ideas cho dạng bài Discuss both views:

Có rất nhiều người học IELTS gặp khó khăn trong việc sắp xếp ý tưởng. Bạn cần phải hiểu rằng việc phát triển IELTS Essays đòi hỏi phải nắm chắc văn phong tiếng Anh. IPPEdu sẽ gợi ý cho bạn cách dựng một đoạn văn vừa đơn giản lại vô cùng hiệu quả nhé.

• Reasoning/Explaining sentence: Đóng vai trò là một lời giải thích về sự ủng hộ/phản đối  một xu hướng/hiện tượng cụ thể. Trong câu này, bạn phải cung cấp các lập luận và bằng chứng hỗ trợ cho tuyên bố trong câu chủ đề. Bài văn có thuyết phục hay không phần lớn phụ thuộc vào tính thuyết phục của Reasoning Sentences. Cách  tự đánh giá độ mạnh yếu của lời giải thích: Nếu trong quá trình lên ý tưởng và viết câu, nếu có  một câu hỏi  (ví dụ: tại sao từ AA lại dẫn đến BB?), nếu lập luận của bạn không thỏa đáng thì đó là lập luận yếu.
• Example: Hãy gia tăng tính thuyết phục cho luận điểm bằng một dẫn chứng về bất kỳ nhân vật/tổ chức/sự kiện liên quan đến mạch lý luận của bạn.
• Link // Analyze the example: Sau khi viết ví dụ, nhiều thí sinh  có xu hướng bỏ qua bước này. Nhưng thực sự, chúng ta nên viết một câu phân tích ví dụ này để kết nối các dẫn chứng cho toàn bài. Bước này đóng vai trò rất quan trọng trong việc tạo nên sự đồng bộ của bài viết. Vì vậy, đừng bỏ qua phần phân tích để liên kết ví dụ với chủ đề nhé!

Khung dàn ý mẫu (Discuss both views)

1. Introduction

[S01 – the modern context // the tendency] [S02 – the topic] Opinion on [topic: view 01 >< view 02] is largely divided. = However, there has been debate over whether [topic]. Both sides of this statement will be examined before the provision of my personal point of view. [can be used for any topic]

[S01 – the topic] The issue of [the topic] is a contentious topic for many people. While some argue [view 01], others believe that [view 02]. Both sides of this statement will be analyzed in this essay before my personal perspective is given. [can be used for any topic]

2. Two body paragraphs

BODY PARAGRAPH 01:

• TOPIC SENTENCE: On the one hand, many people argue that [view 01].
• TOPIC SENTENCE: On the one hand, there are several reasons why [view 01].

BODY PARAGRAPH 02:

• TOPIC SENTENCE: It is also reasonable for others to argue that [view 02].
• TOPIC SENTENCE: However, it is also possible for others to believe that [view 02].
• TOPIC SENTENCE: However, it is also possible to support the opposite view [view 02].

3. Conclusion

The conclusion is where our PERSONAL OPINION is given. It is important to include our perspective & explain why. You should write about 03 SENTENCES.

[S01] In conclusion, I believe that both sides of the argument have their own merits. [S02&S03 – Personal opinion & Explanation] However, on balance, I believe that …… because …..

[S01 – Summarize & Personal opinion] In conclusion, considering the own merits associated with the given both views, I am more convinced that…. [S02&S03 – Personal opinion & Explanation] My belief is based on the point that ….

4. Bài mẫu (Sample Essay – Discuss both views)
