Collocations là một trong những cơ sở cơ bản cần thiết để người học tiếp thu một ngôn ngữ mới, được xem như là “cánh cửa”. Ngoài việc hiểu nghĩa và phân loại các từ, người học phải hiểu cách kết hợp các từ với nhau khi đã đạt đến một trình độ nhất định để có thể sử dụng thành thục từ vựng. Khả năng kết hợp từ được gọi là collocation.

Trong IELTS Speaking có thể được coi là một công cụ giúp thí sinh cải thiện điểm ở các tiêu chuẩn Lexical Resources. Trong từng chủ đề khác nhau, có một số lượng đa dạng và phong phú collocations. Điều này có thể khiến người học khó hệ thống và chọn lọc chủ đề nào để học và sử dụng.

I. Khái quát về collocations

1. Định nghĩa

Có thể nói rằng, collocations là những cụm từ cố định để mô tả một ý nghĩa nào đó. Trong quá trình phát triển của ngôn ngữ đó, những ý nghĩa này được hình thành. Do đó, sự kết hợp không có quy luật và học sinh không thể tự tạo ra collocations.

Do đó, người học chỉ có thể học thuộc, tiếp xúc với chúng và luyện tập thường xuyên để có thể áp dụng nhuần nhuyễn trong giao tiếp thực tế.

2. Vai trò

“Use some less common and idiomatic vocabulary and shows some awareness of style and collocation, with some inappropriate choices” là một tiêu chuẩn về Lexical Resources cho band 7.0 trở lên trong IELTS Speaking. Điều này có nghĩa là người học phải hạn chế việc sử dụng từ vựng và thành ngữ thường dùng (tức là cách diễn đạt hoàn toàn tự nhiên) và thể hiện phong cách nói chuyện của bản thân nhiều hơn.

3. Phân loại

Collocations phải đi kèm từ hai từ trở lên. Tùy thuộc vào cách các loại kết hợp với nhau, collocations có nhiều kiểu. Sau đây là 7 cách kết hợp chính:

• Adjective + Preposition (good at)
• Adjective + Noun (big deal)
• Adverb + Adjective (fully aware)
• Adverb + Verb (walk slowly)
• Verb + Preposition (run out of time)
• Verb + Noun (give a speech)
• Noun + Noun (bar of chocolate)

1. Adjective + Preposition

Good at ⇒ At school, Bill is very good at Mathematics.

Bad at ⇒ But Bill is bad at History and Literature.

2. Adjective + Noun

Deep sleep ⇒ After work, I need a deep sleep because I’m so tired.

Strong coffee ⇒ Sweetened black tea is a ubiquitous drink, along with strong bitter coffee.

3. Adverb + Adjective

Fully aware ⇒ John was fully aware of the fact that Sam fell in love with another boy.

4. Adverb + Verb

Speak loudly ⇒ Can you speak loudly? I can’t hear anything you said.

Walk softly ⇒ My baby is sleeping, please walk softly on the floor!

5. Verb + Preposition

Run on the spot: to move your legs as if running, while you stay in one place ⇒ Athletics run on the spot to warm up before they start training.

6. Verb + Noun

Break a leg: good luck ⇒ Hey Anna, break a leg in your exam today!

Keep a secret ⇒ Please keep secret what I said to you, Tom!

7. Noun + Noun

Bar of chocolate ⇒ My sister went to the convenience store and bought a bar of chocolate yesterday.

A surge of energy ⇒ Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good.

IELTS Speaking Part 1

Q1: Do you play any sports?

⇒ Even though I attempted various popular sports like football and badminton when I was younger, I’ve never taken any of them seriously. I exercise instead. But lately, my pals have been asking me to join them at the basketball court, so I suppose I’ll start playing soon.

Q2: Do you like traveling?

⇒ Sure, a lot. As a result of my idyllic upbringing in a small town, I have a constant desire for traveling and see new locations. Fortunately, I joined a group of friends who share my love of travel, so whenever I go on a vacation, I’m never by myself. We have many plans in store for us.

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Q1: Describe a leisure activity that you usually do in your free time.

You should say:

• What’s the activity?
• Who do you do it with?
• And where?
• And explain why you enjoy this activity.

I’m going to talk about something I like to do in my free time today. It involves viewing scary movies. When I was still a secondary school student, approximately 16 years ago, I started engaging in this passion. I seem to recall that one of my friends at the time presented the film “The Ring.” I have to admit that the movie’s premise and characters captivated me right away. I’ve grown to love this movie genre a lot since then.

Speaking of how frequently I engage in this hobby, on the weekends when I have days off, I typically have my closest friends over to see the newest horror films. After that, we even had a debate regarding the movie we had just seen, including whether it was excellent or poor, which aspects were good, and if it succeeded or failed. We spent over an hour engaging in the debate since it was so fascinating. Even if our chats were unusually short or fruitless, we nonetheless had a great time.

Finally, in terms of how I felt while engaging in this activity, I don’t know why, but I always get a rush of excitement before I start a new movie. Perhaps because I’m interested in the movie’s plot or just because I enjoy watching movies a lot. Anyway, viewing these movies has never made me bored, and I’m hoping that there will be plenty more enjoyable films in the future.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Q: Do women and men have the same kind of leisure activities?

Men and women, in my opinion, prefer various leisure activities. Women are more likely to be passionate about enrichment activities, such as reading books than men are. This may be because males are often more competitive and have a greater desire to succeed than women. However, I see that they have similar tastes in creative pursuits like singing, playing an instrument, or sketching, which I thought was extremely intriguing.
