  • When did you first know about it?
  • Why do you think you can learn it in the future?
  • Do you think it will be difficult?

SAMPLE

A musical instrument I think I can learn in the future is the guitar. I have always been fascinated by it, ever since I was a teenager and saw musicians effortlessly playing at concerts and in music videos.

I first became aware of the guitar when I started listening to rock and acoustic music in high school. The way it can produce such a wide range of sounds, from gentle melodies to powerful riffs, really caught my attention. I also followed Eric Clapton – one of the best guitarists nowadays. The way he slides the guitar, and his solos melt my heart right away. I had decided at that time guitar will be my next instrument to learn, yet I haven’t had the time to fully commit to it.

I am quite confident that I can master guitar in the future – as learning guitar has been more accessible than ever, with many resources available – from online courses to local classes. Plus, I already have a basic understanding of music theory from learning piano, which can be a big help when I take up playing guitar. While I anticipate it will be challenging, especially when it comes to fingering position and mastering chords, I know that with practice, it’s something I can accomplish. Persistence and patience are key.

3. IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample: Musical instrument

SAMPLE

1. What are some benefits of learning to play a musical instrument?

That’s an interesting question! I think that playing a musical instrument will do good to our cognitive development. During the process of playing an instrument, both sides of our brain are activated, and we are constantly put under pressure to solve problems, such as positioning the right chords. Such practice helps our brain to be familiar with pressure and be better prepared for problem–solving actions. Hand–eye coordination can also be enhanced, as different parts of our bodies are actively engaged during playing. It is not to mention that playing an instrument is also a great way to relax, as the soothing sound of guitar or piano can heal our soul.

2. How can playing a musical instrument influence a person’s creativity?

That’s a tough one… I don’t usually play instruments so honestly I don’t have much knowledge of how instruments can affect our creativity haha. But I guess that playing instruments really boosts one’s creativity due to the diversity a player can create when playing one instrument. For example, we have numerous chords in music, and there are thousand ways to connect these chords together. With such abundance, I think there must be space for instrument players to be creative on their own.

3. Why might some people choose to learn multiple musical instruments?

There are quite a few reasons. First, I believe people learn to play various instruments because they want to achieve a new challenge in their life. Learning to play various instruments can also help people to fill their curiosity and better understand the functions of each instrument. Meanwhile, on a more professional level, musicians, especially music producers, need to learn multiple instruments so that they can have many options available in their bags, which makes it easier for them to produce great music.

4. What role does a musical instrument play in different cultural traditions?

I haven’t thought about thís before. I think in some cultures, musical instruments bring spiritual and sentimental values. For example, some ethnic minorities in my country always play their traditional musical instruments on important events, such as new year or celebration of a new harvest, which help evoke the feeling of pride and a sense of belonging to that community.

5. How can access to musical instruments impact music education in various communities?

I believe the increased accessibility of music instruments will definitely have a positive impact on music education in numerous communities. Due to limited budgets, sometimes it is challenging for citizens in one community, especially underprivileged ones, to get access to expensive instruments, such as a piano. If they can receive better financial support, there is a high chance that many talented musicians can be found and the musical industry can have more diversity, with more contributions from different communities.

6. What are some challenges people might face when learning to play a musical instrument?

For sure it is the difficulty at the beginning stage of learning an instrument. The process of getting our hands to fully master an instrument, namely guitar or piano, requires great perseverance and patience at the beginning. This is the period when most learners quit, and when they easily lose the motivation. However, once getting through such times, the musical journey will bear fruit, and it is truly rewarding. Apart from the level of difficulty, budget is also a problem for some. One guitar or piano are quite costly, and sometimes it is challenging for some people to afford one.
