SAMPLE

There was a time when I received advice that I didn’t think was good for me. It happened a couple of years ago when I was considering switching jobs. At that time, I was feeling a bit stagnant in my current role and wanted to explore new opportunities, but I wasn’t entirely sure about the move.

The advice came from a well–meaning family member who suggested that I should stay in my job for stability. They emphasized the security of having a steady income, especially since I had been there for a while and had built up a routine. Their perspective was understandable, but they advised me to avoid taking risks, which didn’t sit well with me.

To be honest, I felt the advice wasn’t good for me because I had already spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted from my career. I knew I needed growth and new challenges to stay motivated, and staying in a comfortable but uninspiring job would only leave me feeling more stuck. While their advice was practical in the short term, I realized it wasn’t aligned with my long–term goals and personal fulfillment.

Ultimately, I made the decision to pursue new opportunities, which led to greater satisfaction in my work life. This experience taught me that sometimes, well–meaning advice can come from a place of caution, but it’s important to listen to your own instincts when making big life decisions.

3. IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample: Seeking Advice

SAMPLE

1. What are some common reasons people seek advice from others?

This can stem from various factors. (Point) First, people ask for advice from others because they lack the expertise in solving certain matters. (Explain) Asking experienced people can provide people with clearer insight on what they should do, may it be financial matters or navigating personal challenges. (Example) For example, some people want to build their first house, and asking those who have already built their houses would help them to learn about mistakes to avoid and tips so that they can apply the best method for building their houses. (Point) Second, asking for advice from others can provide people with better mental support. (Explain)In times of trouble, having someone to listen to your problems and giving you advice would be a big help for people, mentally to go through the troubles, as they have a chance to let their problems out.

2. How can receiving advice from others influence decision–making?

I have never thought about this before … (Point) Hmm I reckon that people can easily be influenced by others’ opinions when it comes to decision–making. The fact that people receive too much information may make it difficult for them to process the information thoroughly, and eventually lead to a confusion for the final decision. For example, when choosing which university to study,

3. Why might someone choose to follow or ignore advice given by others?

I think it depends. Whether one chooses to follow or ignore other advice relies on various factors including trust, relevance and circumstances. For example, people often have a tendency to seek advice from well-trusted people such as their family members or their best friends. In contrast, for those who do not give one enough trust, people may ignore their advice so that they can avoid certain annoyances.

4. What are the benefits of listening to different viewpoints when making a decision?

Different viewpoints help people to make decisions more thoroughly, as they can collect different viewpoints, summarize this information and therefore produce the best thoroughly reviewed decision. For example, when buying a new car, asking for different viewpoints from people who have already owned one car can help people to get a deeper insight into the cars, concerning their resilience and real experience, thus helping people to get the best deal.

5.  How can the quality of advice vary between different sources?

Hmm… That’s an interesting question. For online sources, I think most of the time the advice is quite general. It is not to mention that sometimes there are certain toxic factors from online advice. Meanwhile, for real conversation, especially with our close people, the advice can be more genuine, and they are of our best interest to give us advice.

6. What role does trust play in accepting advice from others?

Trust indeed is the most crucial factor. In times of troubles, people may have no faith in anything, and to accept advice from others, trust is indeed the factor that drives one individual to trust one. Trust lays the foundation for connection, and when one individual finds enough trust in one person, they will more likely to follow that advice.
