IELTS SPEAKING FORECAST Q3/2024 - PART 2: Describe an online friend that you haven’t got a chance to meet face to face & PART 3: Friends

1. IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample: Describe an online friend that you haven’t got a chance to meet face to face

TOPIC: Describe an online friend that you haven’t got a chance to meet face to face.

You should say:

  • Who is the person?
  • What online platform did you meet him/her on?
  • How did you become close to him/her?
  • Why have you not gotten the chance to meet him/her face to face?

SAMPLE

So, there is a friend of mine named Alex, whom I’ve known for a couple of years but have never met in person. We first met when we were put in the same team playing Valorant – a trending FPS game at the moment. My first impression of him was that he was so good at this game, and he literally carried the whole team to the final win. You wouldn’t believe how he managed to pull that 1 vs 5 at the final round, and led our team to the Overtime, where he finally became my favorite idol.

You know, after the game, I asked for his contact and we started chatting on Discord. He was so amicable and friendly. I discovered that apart from being an expert in FPS games, he was also a graduate at Oxford University in the major of Computer Science. I was in awe of his academic achievements. Since then, I called everyday for practicing English speaking, and gradually, our conversations shift from gaming to more intimate topics, and we got to know more about each other.

I still remembered about the time when I got my heart broken, and he was the one who shared and supported me a lot through those tough times. We now consider best online friends now. However, it is a pity that due to geographical barriers, and limited budget, I still haven’t got the chance to meet him in person. In the future, I hope that I can have an opportunity to meet him in real life.

5. IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample: Friends

SAMPLE

1. Why are more and more people making friends online?

There are some reasons why people prefer expanding their social network online. (Point) First, I think it is because of the increased accessibility and convenience of the Internet, which allows individuals to connect with others from anywhere in the world. (Explain) The availability of social media, gaming and forums offer spaces for people with shared interests to meet, even if they are geographically apart. (Example) For example, during my preparation for the Ielts exam, I have been able to connect with many Ielts learners, through groups on social media. We have supported and given each other’s motivation in the Ielts preparatory stages. It still amazes me how small the world is with the Internet.

2. How are online friendships different from real–life friendships?

Hmm that’s a tough one! (Point) I believe that online friendships often differ from real–life friendships in terms of physical presence and interaction.(Explain) Real–life friendship allows for face–to–face communication, body language, and shared physical experiences, whereas online friendships are typically maintained through texts, voice or video chats. This can sometimes create a sense of emotional distance, though strong emotional bonds can still form online. You know it is especially true for my case. (Example) Although I am able to connect with new friends online, most of my close friendships are made offline, through shared experiences. I believe the true interactions create chemical reactions that cannot be replicated through online meetings.

3. What are the good things about having online friends?

Wow, that’s an interesting question! (Point) Having online friends means that people are having a broader social network, which proves to be especially beneficial for their self–development in life. (Explain) It is easier for them to receive support when they develop a startup or they pursue new things, as people can easily find people with the same interests online. In contrast, in real life, it is more challenging to find a friend of the same interest. It is not to mention that through online platforms, people sometimes can find out their true soulmates or best friends, who can give them mental support in life.

4. What problems can people have when they make friends online?

Hmm, I suppose that when making friends online, people can run the risk of being scammed. (Explain) It can be very difficult to verify the authenticity of online identities, and sometimes people can take advantage of such a hole to scam other people. (Example) For example, I have got some friends who have been scammed hundreds of million dong, as some of their so–called “online friends” asked my friends to do them a favor, which was to click a link for charity. Moreover, the connection made online can also be less substantial, due to lack of real interactions.

5. How have social media sites changed the way people make friends?

I have never thought about this question before… I think social media has offered users more diverse ways to expand their social networks, through social platforms, groups and forums. One of the most significant ways social media has changed friendship-making is by providing platforms for people with shared interests and hobbies to connect. People can also passively engage with their friends through posts, photos and status updates, creating a sense of connection even without direct communication.

6. Can online friends help people feel better when they are not happy?

I think yes. (Point) The anonymity and the distance make it easier for people to open up about personal issues. Online communities can also offer a safe space for individuals who may feel isolated in their real life environments. For example, I have an online group named “ the healing therapist”, whom I always disclose my problems with when I have troubles. They receive the information with respect, and give me useful advice and support.
