Fluency and Coherence in IELTS Speaking

  • Your ability to keep talking. Can you say more than just a word or phrase in answer to a question? 
  • Your ability to express your ideas clearly and logically. Can you can link your ideas when moving from one point to the next? Can you use a range of different connecting words and phrases*?
  • Can you do all this without long pauses or repeating yourself?

Useful connecting words and phrases

  • Stalling

This question completely puts me on the spot. Let me think about that… = That’s a difficult/interesting question, I haven’t thought of that before = well…, actually, basically

  • Ask for the question to be repeated 

[Sorry, I can’t understand your question.] Sorry, I didn’t catch what you said, could you repeat that please?

  • Organising your talk in Part 2

OK, so I’m going to talk about … => First of all, I’ll talk about … => Next, I’ll mention … => Thirdly, … => Finally, I want to say … 🡪 And so that brings me to the end of my talk.

  • Expressing ideas

[I think that] My take on this is … = To my way of thinking, … = I suppose that … = I believe that … = I reckon that … = I guess that …

[Not sure] I’m in two minds about this => On the one hand,… On the other hand…

[Not sure] I think I’m on the fence => On the one hand,… On the other hand…

[Yes] Wow/yes, without a doubt… // Absolutely,…

[No] Well, to be honest… // Honestly,…

[Talk about the importance of sth] Yeah/Yes/Yep, I reckon it’s essential …

[I can’t understand it] I can’t get my head around it. 

  • Likes and dislikes 

[I like it] I would probably do sth when I get the chance. It’s the bee’s knees. // I can’t have enough of sth = I crave for sth all the time // I (absolutely) love = I’m really into 

[I don’t like it] It’s not my thing. = It’s not to my taste. // I can’t stand … // I’m not that keen on …

[Said about sth you like, but that you do not love or need strongly] My sister is absolutely craxy about chocolate whereas I can’t take it or leave it.

[Undecided] I don’t have any strong feelings about …

  • Paraphrasing a word or phrase 

[to clarify] Out of season, you know, not in the main holiday period.

[to define a word or phrase you don’t know] I’m not sure of the word exactly but it means …

[Say you can’t remember something] I can’t quite remember the name of the place … 

  • Generalizing

Generally = broadly speaking = as a rule = on the whole = it is often said that… = in most cases = the vast majority of = a small minority of
