Các lỗi formality phổ biến trong IELTS Writing và các phương pháp

Lỗi hình thức (lỗi formality) nói về xu hướng “nhồi nhét” những cụm từ như “It cost an arm and a leg” vào trong bài luận. Vậy tại sao chúng ta lại phạm lỗi trong hình thức tiêu chuẩn của IELTS Writing? Và những lỗi formality phổ biến trong IELTS Writing là gì? Hãy cùng IPPEdu tìm hiểu nhé!

Lỗi formality số 1 – Lỗi viết tắt

I’m, we’re, don’t, the US – UK,.. là các lỗi viết tắt.
Ngoại lệ là khi đề bài cho sẵn từ viết tắt trong câu hỏi (duy nhất ở IELTS Writing Task 1)

Ex: I’m an advocate of the idea that the role of women in modern society can’t be ignored.

(Viết lại hoàn chỉnh của các từ viết tắt)

⇒ I am an advocate of the idea that the role of women in modern society cannot be ignored.

Informal: I donʼt believe that the results are accurate.
Formal: The results are not believed to be accurate.

Informal: The research project wonʼt continue next year.
Formal: The research project will not continue next year.

Lỗi formality số 2 – Ngôn ngữ văn nói không phù hợp

Nên sử dụng từ vựng văn nói và cách diễn đạt văn nói như idioms.
Những từ vựng quá đơn giản như small, do, thing,… cũng là một cách để diễn đạt văn nói.

Ex: Vietnam has a big problem with child labor. If we don’t change right now, things will go worse. We must do something right now!

(Sử dụng từ vựng học thuật)

⇒ There is a severe problem of child labor in Vietnam. The situation may become even worse unless definite actions are taken.

Lỗi formality 2.1. Dùng Verbs Phrases

Informal: The balloon was blown up for the experiment.
Formal: The balloon was inflated for the experiment.

Informal: The patient got over his illness.
Formal: The patient recovered from his illness.

Informal: The results of the study were mixed up.
Formal: The results of the study were confusing.

Informal: This experiment worked out just fine.
Formal: This experiment was successful.

Lỗi formality 2.2. Dùng Slang / Colloquialisms

Việc sử dụng những tiếng lóng chỉ hữu dụng trong IELTS Speaking, với IELTS Writing thì không.

Informal: Lecturers still count on students to use correct grammar and punctuation in essays.
Formal: Lecturers expect students to use correct grammar and punctuation in essays.

Informal: It was raining cats and dogs.
Formal: It was raining very heavily.

Informal: Imma go hit him up.
Formal: I am going to contact him.

Informal: My business is going bankrupt.
Formal: My business has now officially ceased to trade.

Informal: As you examine the health effects of …
Formal: When examining the health effects of …

Informal: I believe the health effects of …
Formal: It is believed that the health effects of …

Lỗi formality số 3 – Sử dụng câu hỏi hỏi tu từ hoặc câu cảm thán

Lưu ý: Cả 2 cách diễn đạt này không phù hợp trong IELTS Writing.

Ex: What is the biggest problem with life in the city? I think it is public health!

(Sử dụng câu trần thuật (statement))

⇒ I think that one of the most worrying problems with life in the city is public health.

⇒ I would argue that worsened public health is one of the most pressing problems associated with city life.

Lỗi formality số 4 – Sử dụng các số liệu cụ thể

Các số liệu cụ thể thường từ những các nghiên cứu để làm dẫn chứng cho bài viết. Cách này tất nhiên sẽ không phù hợp với IELTS vì IELTS – bản chất của nó là kỳ thi ngôn ngữ, yêu cầu sử dụng ngôn ngữ thật sự thuyết phục được người chấm, người đọc.

Ex: A recent study by transport experts has found that less than 90 percent of private vehicles in Vietnam are motorbikes.

Lược bỏ các phần nhắc tới nghiên cứu, có thể diễn đạt kém chính xác hơn thay vì đưa số liệu cụ thể vào, hoặc thêm một văn cảnh cụ thể như một ví dụ.

⇒ For example, in Vietnam, a large number of people are using motorbikes as the primary means of transport.
