Nắm kỹ các quy tắc của cấu trúc từ (word form) rất quan trọng trong IELTS Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing vì:

• IELTS Listening - kiểm tra cụ thể phần chính tả ở đa dạng các dạng TỪ, kể cả loại từ bất quy tắc.
• IELTS Speaking - giúp bạn thể hiện rõ quan điểm của mình hơn. 
• IELTS Reading - sự hiểu biết về nhiều dạng từ khác nhau sẽ giúp bạn tiết kiệm thời gian hơn và đoán được nghĩa của từ theo đúng ngữ cảnh.
• IELTS Writing - cho phép bạn sử dụng cách diễn đạt phức tạp với nhiều từ vựng hơn

A. Cấu trúc từ (Word Form) là gì?

Hầu hết từ trong tiếng Anh luôn tồn tại ở dạng: động - danh - tính - trạng. Nhưng có một số từ thì không.

Để trở thành một từ, có 4 loại hình thành nên: tiền tố (prefixes), hậu tố (suffixes), chuyển loại của từ (conversion), và từ ghép (compounds).

Loại 1 - Tiền tố (Prefixes)

Gồm một chữ cái hay một nhóm chữ được thêm vào trước từ gốc để tạo thêm một nghĩa mới.

• mono- = one: monolingual
• multi- = many: multicultural, multipurpose
• post- = after: postgraduate
• un- = not/opposite to: undemocratic, unusual

Loại 2 - Hậu tố (Suffixes)

Gồm một chữ cái hay một nhóm chữ được thêm vào sau từ gốc để cho biết là nó thuộc loại từ nào trong chức năng ngữ pháp (danh hoặc tính từ).

• -ism / -dom (tạo thành danh từ): freedom, tourism
• -er / -or (tạo thành danh từ mô tả người làm việc gì): actor, employer
• -en / -ify (tạo thành động từ): simplify, widen
• -able (tạo thành tính từ): unprofitable, reasonable
• -ly (tạo thành trạng từ, rất phổ biến): naturally, unhappily

Loại 3 - Chuyển loại của từ (Conversion)

Chuyển đổi từ loại từ này sang loại từ khác.

Ví dụ:

• Can you text her? (từ danh từ text chuyển đổi thành động từ, nghĩa là to send a text-message)
• If you’re not careful, some downloads can damage your computer. ( từ động từ chuyển đổi sang danh từ download)

Loại 4 - Từ ghép (Compounds)

Chúng ta thường liên kết từ hai hoặc nhiều từ hơn để tạo ra một từ mới. Thường thì từ đầu tiên xác định đặc điểm chính của từ thứ hai.

• Adjectives: heartbreaking, sugar-free, airsick
• Verbs: oven-bake, babysit, chain-smoke
• Adverbs: good-naturedly, nevertheless

Một số lỗi thường gặp

+ (incorrect) Nobody wants poor. ⇒ Nobody wants poverty. (correct)

+ (incorrect) Refuse might cause disappoint. ⇒ Refusal might cause disappointment. (correct)

+ (incorrect) Until recently, the Mekong River contained danger levels of pollutants. ⇒ Until recently, the Mekong River contained dangerous levels of pollutants. (correct)

+ (incorrect) The governor, a determine man, cleaned the river in record time and gained more votes. ⇒ The governor, a determined man, cleaned the river in record time and gained more votes. (correct)

+ (incorrect) Joseph was interesting in the story of the Mekong River clean-up. ⇒ Joseph was interested in the story of the Mekong River clean-up. (correct)

B. Bài tập về thay đổi cấu trúc từ (Word Form)

Use the words in capitals to form a word that fits into the space next to it.
