Không vị examiner nào muốn đọc một bài writing toàn những câu đơn gồm chủ ngữ và vị ngữ cả. Vì vậy việc tạo ra những câu ghép, câu phức là một cách tuyệt vời để khoe kĩ năng vận dụng đa dạng cấu trúc câu – nhưng hãy cẩn thận với những câu khai triển quá đà, vì điều này có thể gây nhầm lẫn cho người đọc và làm cho bài viết của bạn có vẻ cẩu thả. 1. Run-on sentences là gì?
Run-on sentence (câu không ngắt) là câu chứa hai mệnh đề độc lập trở lên (có ý nghĩa hoàn chỉnh) bị “buộc” ghép với nhau thay vì được liên kết đúng cách.
2. 3 cách khắc phục run-on sentences
Cách 1: Ngăn cách các mệnh đề bằng cách sử dụng dấu câu.
Cách 2: Tách các mệnh đề bằng cách sử dụng liên từ.
Cách 3: Sắp xếp lại câu (bạn có thể thêm hoặc bớt các từ).
Nhìn vào ví dụ dưới đây:
Run-on sentence: He put on some sunscreen, the sun was so extremely hot, and he wanted to go inside.
“He put on some sunscreen” => mệnh đề thứ 1
“the sun was so extremely hot” => mệnh đề thứ 2
“he wanted to go inside” => mệnh đề thứ 3
Câu sửa lại: He put on some sunscreen because the sun was extremely hot. He wanted to go inside.

Chỉ vì một câu quá dài không nhất thiết là câu đó mắc lỗi run-on. Một số câu dài là đúng ngữ pháp, trong khi một số câu ngắn là sai ngữ pháp. |
3. Lỗi Comma Splice là gì?
Một hình thức phổ biến của run-on sentences là comma splice (lỗi dấu phẩy nối). Lỗi nối bằng dấu phẩy xảy ra khi hai mệnh đề độc lập được nối với nhau chỉ bằng một dấu phẩy.
Ví dụ a: Participants could leave the study at any time, they needed to indicate their preference.
Câu 01 : Participants could leave the study at any time.
Câu 02 : They needed to indicate their preference.
=> Một số dấu phẩy nối xảy ra khi người viết cố gắng sử dụng liên từ chuyển tiếp (transitional adverb) ở giữa câu.
Ví dụ b: The results of the study were inconclusive, therefore more research needs to be done on the topic.
Câu 01 : The results of the study were inconclusive
Câu 02: More research needs to be done on the topic
Liên từ chuyển tiếp: therefore
=> Để sửa kiểu nối dấu phẩy này, hãy sử dụng dấu chấm phẩy (semi colon) trước liên từ chuyển tiếp (transitional adverb) và thêm dấu phẩy sau nó.
Câu sửa lại: The results of the study were inconclusive; therefore, more research needs to be done on the topic.
4. Fused Sentence là gì?

Ví dụ các câu mắc lỗi run-on:
INCORRECT: They || weren’t dangerous criminals they || were detectives in disguise.
CORRECT: They weren’t dangerous criminals; they were detectives in disguise.
INCORRECT: I || didn’t know which job I wanted I || was too confused to decide.
CORRECT: I didn’t know which job I wanted, and I was too confused to decide.
INCORRECT: Toni Morrison is a professor at Princeton University, she wrote the novel The Bluest Eye.
CORRECT: Toni Morrison, a professor at Princeton University, wrote The Bluest Eye.
INCORRECT: I told my roommate I would be late, she still locked me out.
CORRECT: Although I told my roommate I would be late, she still locked me out.
INCORRECT: I told the children I would read to them they said they wanted to sit by me so they could look at the pictures.
CORRECT: When I told the children I would read to them, they said they wanted to sit by me so they could look at the pictures.
