In some countries, small town-centre shops are going out of business because people tend to drive to large out-of-town stores. As a result, people without cars have limited access to out-of town stores, and it may result in an increase in the use of cars. Do you think the disadvantages of this change outweigh its advantages?

• Body par 01 – Benefit 01: Mua sắm ở out-of-town stores giúp người tiêu dùng có thể tiết kiệm chi phí
• Body par 02 – Benefit 02: Tạo ra nhiều cơ hội việc làm hơn cho người dân ở vùng ngoại thành và thúc đẩy người dân di dời ra vùng ngoại ô => giảm bớt tắc nghẽn giao thông và áp lực nhà ở tại các thành phố lớn

Establishing shopping malls in suburban areas rather than in town centers is a growing tendency in many countries. Despite some drawbacks to be considered, I hold the opinion that its benefits are much more significant.

One benefit on a personal level is that customers could enjoy a much wider range of product choices to best meet their needs. Due to incurring lower overhead costs, regional shopping malls would be able to set lower prices for their products compared to those in city centers. Since many can go shopping once to store sufficient groceries and necessities for the whole week, cheaper prices are of their priority to manage their budget and save for other important aspects, especially in the modern context of inflated living expenses.

Another plus point can be seen on a larger scale as the rise in the number of large stores constructed outside of city centers would not only create more job opportunities for local people there but also spur people to relocate to the suburb. This could not only help alleviate traffic congestion and housing pressure in major cities, contributing to an improved living standard for urban dwellers but also trigger economic activities in suburban areas for more equal growth across regions.

The fact that outlying malls rather than downtown ones are drawing people’s attention causes some undesired problems. Firstly, commuting to and from stores in suburban areas requires urban dwellers to travel by car for convenience, leading to an increase in the use of personal vehicles and the amount of exhaust fumes discharged, thus exacerbating persisting air pollution is urban regions. Secondly, those owning no car may have their shopping choices limited to small or online stores with higher prices and fewer products.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that both individuals and society can derive immense financial and economic benefits from the trend of going out of town for shopping. The possible drawbacks of growing car use and shopping constraints can be tackled with the provision of shuttle services and public transport by shopping malls or the local authorities.
